Market Synopsis

Sodium cyanide is a white, water soluble solid inorganic compound with the formula NaCN. It is produced from ammonia, air, caustic soda and natural gas by Andrussow method. The reaction of ammonia with air and natural gas over platinum liberates hydrogen cyanide gas, which is found to be toxic. Though sodium cyanide is not combustible itself, upon direct contact with acid releases highly flammable hydrogen cyanide gas. Having increased affinity for metals makes it is the most preferred chemical in the mining industry for the isolation and segregation of different precious metals such as gold and silver and minerals.  It is typically used as floating reagent in the mining industry.


The processing of gold and silver accounts for almost two-thirds of sodium cyanide application. As sodium cyanide can be easily transported and stored it is utilized as chemical intermediate specifically where there is shortage of hydrogen cyanide sufficing the needs.

 

Rising preferences of people towards investment, there is increased demand for extraction of metals like gold that in turn elevates the need for sodium cyanide in this sector.  Additionally, owing to diminishing quality of silver and gold, there has been rise in the demand of flotation reagent such as sodium cyanide.


Furthermore, new projects and expansion of mining for the exploration and production of gold such as the Blackwater project in Canada and the Rainy River project as well as development of the Eastern Dragon mine in China also shares to the usage of sodium cyanide in the mining industry. Besides sodium cyanide being cost effectives & easy availability boosts up the sodium cyanide market growth. Nevertheless, there are stringent guideline and regulations associated with applicability of sodium cyanide. Agencies, like International Cyanide Management Code has specified a limit on the use of sodium cyanide that in turn can harm the market growth.
