The Evolution of Bots
The fascinating history of bots began way back in 1950's. Alan Turing, the spearheading British Computer Scientist, who was much ahead of his time, began working on the idea whether machines can think. Also, in 1950, he published his all-around recognized article 'Computing Machinery and Intelligence' trailed by the Turing Test as we probably are aware today. The whole idea behind his papers and research was that machines can also think and are intelligent. He spearheaded a parameter of intelligent for machines. ELIZA is thought to be the first chatterbot in the historical backdrop of software engineering. In spite of the fact that the term chatterbot was not coined at that point. It was just in 1994 that the term 'ChatterBot' was created by Michael Mauldin to portray these conversational programs.
ELIZA works by perceiving keywords or expressions from the input to replicate a response using those keywords from pre-programmed responses. For example, if a human says that 'My mom cooks great food', ELIZA would get the word 'mother', and react by asking an open-ended question, 'Tell me more about your family'. This created an illusion of understanding and having an interaction with a real human being, however, the procedure was a mechanized one.
After ELIZA, there were other effective Bots that were made – PARRY in 1972, RACTER in 1983, and then JABBERWACKY in 2005.
